Óbidos

Óbidos is considered to be one of the jewels of Portugal's national heritage.

Recaptured from the Moors in 1418, Óbidos was once the favourite retreat of King Sancho I and was a wedding gift from King Diniz to Queen Isabel. Its unspoilt beauty is reflected in the narrow cobbled streets, elegant whitewashed buldings with balconies decorated with flowers, the ancient churches and the magnificent Moorish castle whose high walls encircle the town.

Óbidos stages events throughout the year like the International Chocolate Festival, Medieval Week and Fado, Pop and Piano Concerts. Óbidos has dozens of restaurants, bars and cafes. Forty Euros for a three course meal for two with a couple of bottles of wine and coffee is an average price. Three favourites are shown below - details are in the Information Packs in all our properties. Do try the local liqueur, Ginja, but you might need to stay close to the walls as you walk back to your car down the cobbled streets.
